The HOW

My younger self was into philosophy and health. A timid human being with strong empathy for others and a spiritual being who strives to have a deep conversation about life. I've become more extroverted as I age. I'd spend my time creating quotes and exploring thought-provoking websites like High Existence. Who knew that I would be reconnecting with my inner child?!

It all started with me going to Barnes and Nobles. After a break-up, I knew something was calling my name. I all of sudden had the urge to get self-help books. So I went to Barnes and Nobles with my best friend, Louise Applegate, where the universe drew me to certain books there. I was fortunate to have my brother’s gift card for books. It was worth a few hundred dollars. There was one book that stood out the most and changed my life. It was “Universe Has Your Back” and it was written by Gabrielle Bernstein. It began with her 30 days of meditation. I just sat in my room and meditated. Oh, my God. That moment changed my life. I was amazed by the result and felt like I was at peace! The rest was history.

I felt that life gave me challenges and lessons to pivot me towards my spiritual journey. After years of lessons, I began to feel more confident in my spiritual journey. I knew that I had a calling to do something bigger. I started to read more spiritual and self-help books! I’ve always loved the holistic approach concept. I even started a food blog, Local Tasters, with a good friend of mine, Melissa Keomungkhoun. She was into Asian food whereas I was into food mindfulness. We ended our blog for good and went our separate ways. She also inspired me to acquire my undergraduate major, Public Relations. The best public relations classmate! I will be forever grateful for that experience.

At one point, I had a dream where I was teaching a spiritual course where it then led to my Instagram account. I posted a story about manifesting challenges and someone suggested that I set up a Facebook group. And I did! It led to ASL spiritual junkies, a spin-off of Gabrielle Bernstein’s name but for ASL community. I came to the realization that I've always loved to inspire others with mindfulness, health, and spirituality. I also grew up with a lot of health challenges and ended up signing up for the Integrative Institution of Nutrition health coaching certification program to uplift my health. I recognized my health journey transformed along with mentors, therapy, spirituality, and yoga! They all were life-changing. That made me realize that a holistic approach to life is a game-changer and it confirms my intuition. I began to LOVE what I do and I realized that it can become a career too. That sparked my motivation. Although my first college major choice was philosophy, society made me drop that dream due to money and then I thought of a nutrition career as my second option. I wasn't sure about the idea of becoming a doctor and nutrition fieldwork/career is very competitive out there, so I dropped that option. I ended up majoring in public relations and graduated with a MA in Sign Language Education. So, in the end, they were blessings for my career development. Now, I am picking up on my childhood dreams, which are philosophy and health. It is amazing how life's journey led me to this!

I've met amazing people during my journey that inspired me to follow my passion. During the pandemic period, I came across AstroWoke's video on Instagram that promoted astrology class in ASL. It captured my attention so I signed up right there. I took 3 classes and it was life-changing! I had a natal reading with Venesse as well and it validated what I wanted to do with my life. Thank you, Venesse, for reigniting my passion!

During the pandemic, I dove into my personal transformation and my love of yoga. But my world changed when I signed up with DeafHood Yoga. I came to the realization that ASL accessibility in yoga is truly important. I finally understood the foundation of proper breathing and yoga itself. I fell in love with yoga even more.

Fortunately, I found the Unitarian Universalist church in Silvers Spring, Maryland. They offered online services with ASL interpreters and a group of ASL/Deaf people. I fell in love and have been attending there since.

I also met this amazing person who I consider my spiritual mentor! I had this instant connection with Reiki healer Stephanie Gasco. I love learning so much from her. Stephanie’s services can be found through Facebook, Bohemia Modo, and YouTube channel, Bohemia Grace, which truly helped me a lot on my journey.

Lastly, Spiritual motivational speaker Gabrielle Bernstein is my main role model and I aim to follow her steps! Her concept of connecting spirituality and health resonated with me the most. She just released her book, Happy Days: The Guided Path from Trauma to Profound Freedom and Inner Peace. It is a powerful book and it talks about how we can be free of our trauma if we do the work with spiritual tools. One part that stood out the most was the visualization and concept on how operation of physical sensation and emotion are connected with sensations of physical tensions (muscle stiffness and such) from anxiety and trauma in general. Once we talk out with our anxiety or trauma, our physical being is more likely to be healthier. I connect with Gabrielle deeply on how our emotions are connected with our health! It was an honor attending Gabrielle’s recent presentation: Happy Days, with provided ASL accessibility. I was fortunate to be in touch with Bernstein’s team to arrange that. It came out successfully and I fangirled pretty hard when Gabrielle signed the “I Love You” sign at the near end of the event! I aim to see more events being accessible in ASL like this.

I knew that I wanted something more. A spiritual space for the Deaf and signing community and coaching services. I began to look for more spiritual accessible services in ASL.

I knew that those were the meaningful encounters that led me to my passion. Thanks to those people who pushed me to do this. I believe in meaningful coincidences where things are meant to happen.

Spiritual tools are powerful for my journey. I want to provide a guide to spiritual/health transformation in ASL and have a spiritual space for the Deaf/Signing community. So, here I am!

Here's to sharing light with you!

Namaste,

Allison
